Planning a Fiji dive holiday?

Fiji boasts some of the world’s best dive spots.  Warm water, great visibility and a myriad of beautiful coral and colourful fish – it doesn’t get much better for the dive enthusiast! Fiji’s reefs offer an amazing diving experience.

From swimming alongside schooling fishes and large pelagics to weaving among shallow soft coral laden with bommies, Fiji has it all. Spanning 1.3 million square kilometres, the Fijian archipelago encompasses one of the most expansive reef systems in the world. From wild advanced current dives in shark-infested passages, to calm and sheltered beginner dives along shallow, sandy-bottomed patches.  Barrier reefs, atolls, patch reefs, channels, passages and fringing reefs offer everything divers at all levels of experience could wish for.

Kadavu Region Diving

The North Astrolabe Lagoon offers close proximity to some excellent diving just off the main island of Viti Levu.

This barrier reef is the perfect example of Fiji’s amazing soft corals and your likely to see large pelagic species, schooling barracudas and turtles. Hosting many dive sites, the reef is one of the places where manta ray encounters are common. Divers can explore numerous channels and passages while viewing pristine coral formations teeming with tropical fish.

There is about 25 nm of open water from NE Beqa to Usbourne Passage before you enter into the lee of the Kadavu reefs and the entrance into the North Astrolable lagoon.

There are great waterfalls on the southern side of Kadavu Island in Kadavu village.

The Great Astrolabe Reef Diving

The fourth largest reef in the world, the Great Astrolabe Reef encircles the celestial Kadavu Island Group creating a natural protective lagoon.

Approximately 100km South of mainland Fiji, the Great Astrolabe Reef is remote and untouched. Famous for offering some of the best diving, snorkelling, and fishing on the planet.

Only metres from the shore, you’ll discover the reef’s spectacle of colours, diversity of marine life and wondrous coral gardens. The more adventurous traveller need only venture a little further to encounter turtles, swim with manta rays and admire the majesty of whales, during the season.

Shark Reef Marine Reserve Diving, Pacific Harbour

This hard coral reef of Shark Reef Marine Reserve, just off Vitu Levu’s south coast, is where guided shark encounters take place. More than 8 shark species frequent this reef including bull sharks, tawny grey nurse sharks, white-tip, black-tip and grey reef sharks, sicklefin lemon sharks, silvertips and the occasional tiger shark.

Beqa Lagoon Diving

Situated off the coast of Vitu Levu’s Coral Coast, the large Beqa Lagoon has nearly 100 different dive sites full of colourful reefs and alive with tropical fish, multi-hued soft coral and other marine life. The water is generally calm, clear and warm.

Namena Marine Protected Reserve Diving, Savusavu

This magnificent barrier reef is a protected marine reserve populated by brilliant soft corals, invertebrates and a variety of hard corals. It hosts several dive sites with bommies and pinnacles. You’re likely to see a few sharks and other pelagics, and  may even spy garden eels in the sand.

Somosomo Strait Diving, Taveuni

A couple of renowned dive sites occupy the narrow passage between Vanua Levu and Taveuni. You can swim through tunnels of soft corals and cruise walls with brilliant displays of white soft corals with colourful sea whips, gorgonian fans, sponges and crinoids. Look for pelagics off the wall and lionfish, octopus and morays in the shallows.

Bligh Waters Diving

Between Fiji’s two main islands, the dive sites here are best visited by liveaboard. The water moves through the channels bringing in nutrients to support a large array of marine life, from tiny fish to large predators.

North & West of Viti Levu Diving

The best for casual and relatively new divers this area offers easy diving with very few currents. Most sites are relatively shallow and you’ll see schools of small colourful fish.

The best time of year to dive in Fiji

Diving in Fiji is excellent all year round because it is not affected by land runoff or large-scale weather shifts. During summer (December – March) the water temperature sits between 27-30°C (75-80°F).  Higher water temperatures do increase the oceanic plankton growth which can reduce visibility however only the fussiest of divers would notice. During winter (June – September) the water temperatures drop to a comfortable 24-27°C (70-75°F). Visibility of more than 100ft (30m) is better during the cooler months.

First time divers

Fiji offers plenty of perfect diving spots for the first time or inexperienced divers. If you don’t have a dive certificate – don’t worry as most resorts offer dive certification courses onsite. Ask us for more information about Fiji dive certification.
